color rub

Color rubbing resembles the effect of tempera painting. The process involves multiple layers of semi-opaque mediums, sometimes with clear isolating layers in between, which are eventually wet sanded or rubbed down to create subtle color shifts.

Left unvarnished, the surface resembles dry pastel; when sealed it becomes a deeper saturated color.

Color variation can be controlled by the amount of colors and order of application. Surfaces often have a vertical direction and can be left unadorned or as a backdrop for other methods of ornamentation. On properly prepared substrates, color rub is very durable.

The samples here represent only a few of the color possibilities.
